Here is the statement in full:
The elections held recently in Sudan were an essential step in a process laid out by Sudan's Comprehensive Peace Agreement. The United
States notes the initial assessment of independent electoral observers that Sudan's elections did not meet international standards. Political rights and freedoms were circumscribed throughout the electoral process, there were reports of intimidation and threats of violence in South Sudan, ongoing conflict in Darfur did not permit an environment conducive to acceptable elections, and inadequacies in technical preparations for the vote resulted in serious irregularities. The United States regrets that Sudan's National Elections Commission did not do more to prevent and address such problems prior to voting.
The people of Sudan are to be commended for their efforts to make Sudan's first multi-party elections in over two decades peaceful and meaningful. In the months and years ahead it will be critical to continue pressing for progress for the civil and political rights of all of the Sudanese people. This priority will not expire with the CPA, and all parties should draw on this experience to improve preparations for future elections and referenda.
The United States also remains committed to working with the international community to support implementation of outstanding elements of the CPA and ensure that the referendum happens on time and that its results are respected. With partners in the region and beyond, we will continue to engage in the preparations necessary to support peace and stability after the 2011 referenda, and continue to promote peace, security, and accountability in Darfur.

أمريكا تقول ان مخالفات وقعت في انتخابات السودان
واشنطن (رويترز) - قال البيت الابيض يوم الثلاثاء ان الانتخابات العامة السودانية شابتها "مخالفات خطيرة" وان الولايات المتحدة ملتزمة بالمساعدة في ضمان أن يتسم الاستفتاء على استقلال الجنوب الذي سيجرى عام 2011 بالنزاهة.
وتشير النتائج الاولية للانتخابات الرئاسية والبرلمانية التي قاطعتها عدة أحزاب معارضة وشابتها مزاعم وقوع تلاعب الى أنها ستسفر عن فوز كبير للرئيس عمر حسن البشير وحزب المؤتمر الوطني.
وقال مراقبون اجانب بالفعل ان الانتخابات لم تف بالمعايير الدولية. وهذه أول انتخابات تعددية في السودان منذ 24 عاما.
وقال البيت الابيض في بيان "تم الالتفاف حول الحريات المدنية والسياسية طوال العملية الانتخابية ووردت انباء تفيد بوقوع ترهيب وتهديدات بالعنف في جنوب السودان ولم يسمح استمرار الصراع في دارفور بإشاعة أجواء تتيح اجراء انتخابات مقبولة وأدى نقص الاستعدادات الفنية للانتخابات الى مخالفات خطيرة."
وأضاف "تأسف الولايات المتحدة لان المفوضية الوطنية للانتخابات في السودان لم تبذل مزيدا من الجهد لمنع مثل تلك المشاكل والتصدي لها قبل عملية الاقتراع."
وكانت وزارة الخارجية الامريكية قالت يوم الاثنين ان انتخابات السودان لم تكن حرة ولا نزيهة لكنها ستتعامل مع الفائزين فيها سعيا لتسوية النزاعات الداخلية قبل استفتاء عام 2011 الذي قد يسفر عن استقلال الجنوب.
وقال البيت الابيض "كانت الانتخابات التي اجريت أخيرا في السودان خطوة أساسية في العملية المقررة في اتفاق السلام الشامل (بين الشمال والجنوب لعام 2005)."
وأضاف "وسيكون من المهم بشكل حاسم في الشهور والسنوات المقبلة مواصلة الضغوط لتحقيق تقدم على صعيد الحقوق المدنية والسياسية لكل أبناء الشعب السوداني."
وتابع "وستظل الولايات المتحدة كذلك ملتزمة بالعمل مع المجتمع الدولي... على ضمان اجراء الاستفتاء في وقته المحدد واحترام نتائجه | |
